People are lining up everyone to get their ticket for a trip around the moon, or at least, that’s the future Elon Musk envisions. SpaceX recently announced that the first person to book his round-trip ticket around the moon will be Japanese fashion guru Yusako Maezawa. The ship he will be taking is called the Big Falcon Rocket spaceship (BFR), whose initialism may be an homage to Doom’s Big Freaking (sorry, we’re PG-13) Gun. Here are the interesting bits from the story:
Cost: The amount Maezawa paid is unknown, but we do know it is signifanctly more than $110 million which is how much he paid for a Jean-Michel Basquiat painting.
Timeline: This flight will tentatively take place in 2023. SpaceX also wants to make an unpiloted trip to Mars in 2022 and a crewed flight in 2024.
Implications: With the USA v. USSR space race behind us, we’re not looking at a private sector space race between SpaceX, Blue Origin (Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com), and Virgin Galactic (Richard Branson).
Maezawa evidently will be inviting 6 to 8 artists to join him on the flight, so you have 7 years to become a famous artist if you want to tag along.
